Some places claim to be dog-friendly; The Cromwell Arms in Romsey actually is. Not only are four-legged guests welcomed with open arms, but they’re also spoiled with thoughtful touches that make a real difference when travelling with a dog.
Our cocker spaniel, Mango, enjoyed his first-ever pub sleepover here – and we couldn’t have picked a better spot.
A Stay Designed with Dogs in Mind
If you’re searching for dog-friendly accommodation in Hampshire, The Cromwell Arms should be high on your list. From the moment we stepped through the doors, it was clear: this is a place where dogs are as much a part of the experience as their owners.

The dog welcome pack is a fantastic touch, providing:
A bowl
A towel
Dog shampoo
Chews
A ball
Poo bags
Mango, of course, went straight for the chews, while we appreciated the inclusion of a towel and shampoo – both invaluable after a muddy countryside walk.
Dog-Friendly Dining & Outdoor Spaces
Unlike many pubs where dogs are restricted to a corner by the bar, The Cromwell Arms has a dedicated dog-friendly section in the restaurant, allowing you to enjoy your meal with your pup comfortably by your side. For us, this was vital because Mango suffers from Separation Anxiety so there is no way we could have left him in the room.

Outside, there’s a water station for dogs, perfect for rehydrating after a long walk or a warm day. We noticed plenty of water bowls around the place as well. It’s these thoughtful extras that set this place apart.
Comfortable, Convenient Accommodation

Our dog friendly room was on the ground floor, making those necessary late-night or early-morning outdoor trips incredibly easy. The bed was extremely comfy, with sumptuous Egyptian cotton bedding. There were complimentary Teapigs teas, Nespresso coffee, fresh milk and bottled water in the fridge, free Wi-Fi, Cole & Lewis toiletries and gorgeously fluffy towels.
The rooms are stylish yet practical, and with a 1yr old, inquisitive puppy in tow, we were thankful for a raised area to keep our bags! There was plenty of room under the table for Mango's crate as well so we all fitted in very nicely.
If you’re planning a pet-friendly staycation in Hampshire, this setup makes life so much easier.
Exploring Dog Friendly Romsey
A stay here isn’t just about the accommodation – Romsey is a fantastic dog-friendly destination. The Test Way offers scenic riverside walks, while the nearby Broadlands Estate and Sir Harold Hillier Gardens provide more opportunities to stretch those paws (though it’s always worth checking dog access rules in advance).
A short walk into town found us at Romsey Abbey, which allows well-behaved dogs inside, which was perfect as it meant we could all go in to see the gorgeous interior.

We opted for a walk in Ampfield Woods, just a few mins drive from where we were staying. There is free parking, and it's a lovely, peaceful walk with easy access paths as well as smaller tracks through the woodland. The perfect end to a lovely weekend away.

Final Thoughts
For dog owners looking for a relaxing, well-thought-out stay in Hampshire, The Cromwell Arms ticks all the boxes. From the welcome pack to the ground-floor rooms, every detail makes travelling with a dog easier and more enjoyable.
Mango’s first pub sleepover was a resounding success – and we’ll definitely be back. If you’re after a break where your pup is truly welcomed, this one’s well worth a visit.
